Refresher Chews were launched in 1955 so are a truly retro sweet. The original packaging had cartoons of children believed to be the Matlow family of Swizzels Matlow the manufacturers. The 'New' Refresher Chew was developed when Trevor Matlow decided to experiment with a new chew wrapping machine and discovered that a powder could be put inside the chew. As this was such a novel discovery the company decided to call it 'New Refresher'.
