Calling all Bah Humbugs followers!!

Spring has sprung, the daffodils are in full bloom and lambs are appearing in the fields, but that is not all that is happening this year...

Here at Bah Humbugs we have had a makeover!  Our traditional sweet shop has a fresh new look but somehow looks even more traditional, with dresser style units cram packed with sweet delights. If you are lucky enough to live anywhere near us, why not pay us a visit and see the transformation in the shop? We still have all the traditional sweets - ranges of boiled, bon bons, classic humbugs and mints, liquorice, toffees, retro and many, many more - all now displayed beautifully in our renovated shop.

A BIG thank you to Hedgehog furniture (www.hedgehogfurniture.co.uk / https://en-gb.facebook.com/hedgehogfurniture )  for creating our beautiful units, we LOVE them!

Also new to Bah Humbugs is some rather yummy milkshakes! Made using only the best Brymor Ice Cream, fresh whipped cream and sauces and toppings of your choice. So, as the weather continues to improve, call in and treat yourself!

At this time of year many people take a look at their lifestyle and resolve to improve things in the year to come.  We at Bah Humbugs are no different and, despite being in the business of supplying delicious traditional sweets and treats to the nation, we also understand the need to maintain a balanced and healthy diet.

Following a good investigation of our products we have come up with a list of sweets that you can fit into a healthy way of life without suffering the pangs of guilt for falling off the sweet wagon!  So, hold on to your resolve by all means, but have a quick look at the list to see if anything takes your fancy!  We would always recommend that you consume your treats in moderation, and so everything on this list we would advise you work out a plan to fit them in with the rest of your balanced diet...

Chocolate Covered Treats

We have a range of delicious treats wrapped in a chocolate coating.... raisins, peanuts, brazil nuts and crystallised ginger, all of which are good for you and, if you add them into your treat allowance, they may just help you stay on the straight and narrow by giving you a little boost!

Mints

Our mint and humbug range is extensive and we've included them in this list as they are so refreshing and give you a little sugar boost when you need one, especially if you've reduced your intake in other areas.  We would suggest a variety to use as after dinner mints so they become part of your meal rather than a sweet for the sake of eating one.  We have delicious mint crumbles, buttermint bonbons, classic mint imperials, golden humbugs, stripey humbugs, mintoes, spearmint chews and many more! Dinner guests will also appreciate these on the table to finish off their meal.

Jelly Belly Jelly Beans

If you're into 'bean counting' or calorie counting then why not try a mix of Jelly Belly Jelly Beans. You can count out your allowance and eat them whenever you want!  Each Jelly Belly Jelly Bean is 4 calories, so you can have 25 beans for just 100 calories!  Whether you're with a slimming club or just counting your calories most people can squeeze 100 calories out of their daily calorie allowance for a treat, so we think this a great one for those managing their daily intake.

Liquorice

There are many claims of health benefits from liquorice, including soothing gastrointestinal problems - a common issue after so much overindulgence in December!  It is also thought to help cleanse the respiratory system - something that we could all do with to keep the winter colds at bay.  Liquorice may help relieve stress by balancing cortisol levels in the adrenal gland. Now, although we don't have the medical evidence to prove these claims, liquorice has been used for millennia as a health supplement, so who are we to argue?

Sugar Free

There will be many of you who have decided to reduce your sugar intake, either for specific health reasons, or as a general improvement of your diet.  If this is you, then we have a lovely range of sugar free sweets, including some traditional favourite flavours such as Sherbet Lemons, Rhubarb & Custards, Chocolate Eclairs, Spearmints Chews and many more.

Hello all Bah Humbug followers!

How are you finding the drop in temperature as we enter autumn? Bit of a shock after the sunshine of the summer.  Here in Masham the raincoats and umbrellas have made an appearance but for half term week it looks as though the sun will be shining, for at least some of the time anyway. Let's hope it last until Halloween so that all the Trick or Treaters out there can stay dry while they scare their victims!

We're making preparations for our Halloween offering so, for everyone who doesn't want to have a trick played, make sure you put a visit to the shop on your list of things to do and stock up on your treats.

We have lots of Halloween themed treats, chocolate eye balls, Halloween chocolate coins, special Halloween sours and much, much more! The shop is decorated and awaiting your visit but be prepared, we have some spooky guests!

Looking a little further forward with an eye on the bonfire season we have added to our usual toffee offering with wonderful bonfire toffees, together with a bigger choice of Mega Lollies, including Treacle or Toffee.  You might just be looking for something to warm you up, and we have a great range of herbal sweets that are just the job.

For any locals who listen to Radio York, you may have heard clues on their Finders Keepers slot which would lead you to our door.  It's always great fun to be included in local broadcast and events so we hope you were listening but if you missed it you can catch up here.

Hello everyone!

Such exciting times for Masham...

For those of you who live in and around Masham, and those others who visit or just follow news of our lovely town, will know that Masham and Lower Wensleydale was 'removed' from the map when work started on the A1 upgrade in 2005.  Now, after years of battling to get a brown sign instated, and having provided our own temporary sign (a story in itself) Masham is finally back on the map.  A hard fought battle, with the sign being funded by local businesses and the Parish Council.  Well done to all those who took up the fight and won!  Follow this link to read more https://www.strayfm.com/news/local-news/1941287/masham-back-on-the-map/

Now that we're back Masham has come great plans coming up...

Masham market is holding special events on three weekends through the year, 30th April, 1st and 2nd May incorporating the Farmers Market, 30th and 31st July, incorporating Yorkshire Day and 1st and 2nd October incorporating the Farmers Market. As lovers of nostalgic sweets we have a bit of a soft spot for liquorice, and as it turns out a lot of our customers do too! Of all the sweets we sell it’s our liquorice products that always move off the shelves the fastest, and so we thought it might be nice to celebrate the best of British liquorice!

Pontefract Cakes

Also known as Pomfret and Pomfrey cakes, these hard little liquorice discs have been a staple in any sweet lovers diet for decades and is easily one of our most popular products. It makes sense when you think about it; like many of the best British sweets Pontefract cakes come from Yorkshire which is where our shop is based!

We’ve lost count of how many Pontefract cakes we’ve sold; it’s probably somewhere in the millions at this point! It’s not hard to see why either; they’re notoriously moreish and there’s no such thing as eating just one.

Bassetts Catherine Wheels

When you hear the term ‘Catherine Wheel’ it’s usually fireworks that come to mind, but not always. Bassetts (responsible for the ubiquitous Liquorice Allsorts), have created a new kind of Catherine Wheel, and this time it’s one that you can eat!

Catherine Wheels are long laces of liquorice that have been wrapped around a brightly coloured jelly called a Spog for a great combination of sweetness and the tarter liquorice flavour. It’s another one of our best sellers and you can eat it however you like too, either by unravelling it and saving the jelly button for last or by scoffing it all in one go, it’s up to you!

Dutch Liquorices

We stock all kinds of Dutch Treats liquorice products so it didn’t seem fair to choose just one! If you thought we Brits were nuts on liquorice we’ve got nothing compared to the Dutch; their love of liquorice (or ‘drop’ as they call it) is nothing short of legendary!

As the weather gets warmer (slightly), we all start looking forward to what summer will bring.  We know there will be weddings all over the country, in churches, stately homes, gardens, chapels, by riversides, on beaches and anywhere else that today's happy couples can think of to make their big day that little bit special and unusual.

This great Sweet Cart can be hired from us and can include the jars, sweets, scoops and bags for your guests to help themselves.  We also do a range of delicious pre-bagged Fudge, a selection of lucky bags, cones of sweets or sweet buckets if you wanted some of your sweets pre-packed.

I don't know about you but our winters seem to get longer and darker, although in Yorkshire we seem to have avoided any deep snow falls or treacherous black ice so it's not all bad.

Now that the sun is shining we can turn our minds to a little spring cleaning, stock replenishing, and that general feeling of renewed energy that puts a spring in everyone's step.

Hi fellow sweet lovers

Today I'm looking at Lion's sweets.  Do you all remember them?  Way before I came to join the team at Bah Humbugs I had realised that Lion sweets held a place in the heart of so many people and that everyone has their particular favourite.  In fact, at one point in my life I 'typed' my work colleagues by what I thought would be their favourites.  For example 'H' was a Mr Sports Mixture, 'S' was a Miss Fruit Pastille, 'L' was Lady Licorice Gums!  I'm not sure I was always right, but it was fun at the time.

Lion Sweets have been manufactured since 1903, and they have retained their reputation for quality and taste. These gum sweets are still made at the original factory in Cleckheaton, which is a great bonus for our Traditional Yorkshire Sweet Shop to be able have such an iconic brand made so close to home.

If you haven't already decided which are your favourites (which I very much doubt!), then let me remind you of the Lion Range.

Lion's Midget Gems

Perhaps the top sellers are the delicious Lion's Midget Gems, a selection of fruit flavours, hard and chewy and with the original Licorice Gums still included.

Lion's Sports Mixture

Lion's Sports Mixture is another firm favourite with it sports shaped hard gums packing a punch with their fruity flavours, and again including the Licorice Gums.

Lion's Fruit Salad

Next up we have the delicious Lion's Fruit Salad, hard gums shaped as fruit to correspond to their flavour.  Chewy, fruity and incredibly moreish!

Lion's Fruit Pastilles

If I still haven't got to your favourite, maybe you're a Lion's Fruit Pastilles person?  Fruit shaped again but these are sugar coated and, once more, deliciously chewy and bursting with flavour.

Lion's Wine Gums

Lion's Wine Gums might be your thing?  Geometric shaped sweets which are stamped with 'wine', 'claret', 'rum', 'port', and which, as a child, I thought were truly naughty sweets to eat! Hard gums bursting with flavour.

Lion's Liquorice Gums

And now for what I consider the hardcore devotees to Lion's sweets class as their favourites.  We have Lion's Licorice Gums, although included in some of the other mixtures these are sought after on their own and are extremely popular.

Lion's Poor Bens

And the final two are of course, Lion's Poor Bens, a mix of liquorice and aniseed flavour in a delicious chewy hard gum, and Lion's Butterscotch Gums, sweet and buttery whilst also hard and chewy - a great combination!
