As the weather gets warmer (slightly), we all start looking forward to what summer will bring.  We know there will be weddings all over the country, in churches, stately homes, gardens, chapels, by riversides, on beaches and anywhere else that today's happy couples can think of to make their big day that little bit special and unusual.

Here at Bah Humbugs we are always delighted to be a part of such celebrations.  We have supplied wedding favours, table decorations, wedding gifts, bridesmaids favours and more in the past and are now delighted to be the proud owners of our very own Sweet Cart!!

This great Sweet Cart can be hired from us and can include the jars, sweets, scoops and bags for your guests to help themselves.  We also do a range of delicious pre-bagged Fudge, a selection of lucky bags, cones of sweets or sweet buckets if you wanted some of your sweets pre-packed.

Sweets can be of your own choosing if you wish to follow a theme for your big day, or you can leave the choice to the team at Bah Humbugs who will organise a selection according to your budget and guest numbers.

A selection of sugar free, gluten free, gelatine free sweets are also available so we can meet most dietary requirements.

I don't know about you but our winters seem to get longer and darker, although in Yorkshire we seem to have avoided any deep snow falls or treacherous black ice so it's not all bad.

Riley's Toffee Rolls

Bah Humbugs now stocks delicious RILEY'S TOFFEE ROLLS - do you remember them?

Originally made in the early 1900's by the Riley Brothers these chocolates eventually fell into the hands of Kraft. Thankfully the great-neice of Ella Riley (Freya) discovered a hand written recipe detailing how to make these delicious Toffee Rolls and she started making them a couple of year ago.

Today they're all made, completely by hand by Freya and her husband Steve in their sweet shop in Bridgend. But they're a Yorkshire sweet & so many of our customers asked us for regularly for them that we just had to get them in for you to try - because we just love all things that combine confectionery and Yorkshire!

They taste exactly the same as they used to, but there is one difference and that is the texture - the toffee is slightly softer (because it's kinder for our teeth). Other than that, they remain the same - they are made to the same recipe you see.

Not only are we now stocking Riley's Toffee Rolls we also have in stock Riley's Salted Caramels which really very tasty indeed; the combination of salt and Riley's Toffee Roll is a taste sensation which has to be tried, so what are you waiting for? Lion's Butterscotch Gums

Bad news for Lion's fans - Tangerine Confectionery have stopped making their super scrumptiousButterscotch Gums and we're gutted :-( They're a delicious buttery gum with a smooth and silky texture.

Lion's Gums are hugely popular in Bah Humbugs and we sell hundreds of kilos of their sweets each year. No other company seems to be able to emulate their hard, chewy, fruity flavours and we wouldn't want them to!

Their most famous and iconic sweets are of course the Lion's Sports Mixtures and Lion's Midget Gems - both of which contain their famous hard black liquorice flavoured gums. And YES, the ones we sell are the PROPER ones! This is a question we get asked so often in Bah Humbugs because the pre-packed Lion's Midget Gems and Lion's Sports Mixtures actually contain blackcurrant flavoured black ones - this just isn't right!!

We have a few bags of Butterscotch Gums left in stock, but once they're gone then i'm afraid they will be gone for good - unless we can persuade the manufacturers that they are making a big mistake.

But in the meantime, you can still buy all your favourite Lion's Gums from us here in Bah Humbugs and we can ship them all over the world. Hi fellow sweet lovers

Today I'm looking at Lion's sweets.  Do you all remember them?  Way before I came to join the team at Bah Humbugs I had realised that Lion sweets held a place in the heart of so many people and that everyone has their particular favourite.  In fact, at one point in my life I 'typed' my work colleagues by what I thought would be their favourites.  For example 'H' was a Mr Sports Mixture, 'S' was a Miss Fruit Pastille, 'L' was Lady Licorice Gums!  I'm not sure I was always right, but it was fun at the time.

Lion Sweets have been manufactured since 1903, and they have retained their reputation for quality and taste. These gum sweets are still made at the original factory in Cleckheaton, which is a great bonus for our Traditional Yorkshire Sweet Shop to be able have such an iconic brand made so close to home.

If you haven't already decided which are your favourites (which I very much doubt!), then let me remind you of the Lion Range.

Lion's Midget Gems

Perhaps the top sellers are the delicious Lion's Midget Gems, a selection of fruit flavours, hard and chewy and with the original Licorice Gums still included.

Lion's Sports Mixture

Lion's Sports Mixture is another firm favourite with it sports shaped hard gums packing a punch with their fruity flavours, and again including the Licorice Gums.

Next up we have the delicious Lion's Fruit Salad, hard gums shaped as fruit to correspond to their flavour.  Chewy, fruity and incredibly moreish!

If I still haven't got to your favourite, maybe you're a Lion's Fruit Pastilles person?  Fruit shaped again but these are sugar coated and, once more, deliciously chewy and bursting with flavour.

Lion's Wine Gums

Lion's Wine Gums might be your thing?  Geometric shaped sweets which are stamped with 'wine', 'claret', 'rum', 'port', and which, as a child, I thought were truly naughty sweets to eat! Hard gums bursting with flavour.

And now for what I consider the hardcore devotees to Lion's sweets class as their favourites.  We have Lion's Licorice Gums, although included in some of the other mixtures these are sought after on their own and are extremely popular.

And the final two are of course, Lion's Poor Bens, a mix of liquorice and aniseed flavour in a delicious chewy hard gum, and Lion's Butterscotch Gums, sweet and buttery whilst also hard and chewy - a great combination!

Liquorices from Bah Humbugs

LIQUORICE - it's a bit of a Love it / Hate it kind of sweet.. are you a lover of Liquorice or can you not stand the stuff? I'm always amazed at just how many people do love Liquorice and stock up on loads of different bags of the black stuff here in our sweet shop.

We have approximately 60 different liquorices on offer at Bah Humbugs from throughout the world, and all of them draw much attention. People always ask me why we sell so many Liquorices from Holland, Belgium and Scandinavia. And the answer is, Grandma Humbug (my mum) used to work as an Au Pair in Amsterdam and made lots of lovely Dutch friends whilst she was there who she has stayed in touch with ever since. When these family friends used to come and visit us they'd bring us mountains of Liquorice to try....and if the truth be told, i've actually only really started to like Liquorice in the last few years. Anyway, I decided to get a couple of these liquorices in to sell in the shop for nostalgic reasons and they sold really well. So i increased the product lines and well, the rest is history. We have a great following in terms of Liquorice fans and we send it all over the world. PROEER Midget Gems, with black liqourice ones!

It has been a busy time for us at Bah Humbugs Sweet Shop this summer, with lots of customers coming from all around Yorkshire and further afield. With the large variety of sweets, from dutch liquorice to chewy toffees and a whole selection of our old hard boiled favourites, there's always something for everyone. Here's a run down of our top ten sellers on our online sweet shop this summer:

1. Lion's Midget Gems - the classic, hard midget gem! These are the original, juicy hard gum sweets made by Lion's in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire. The black ones are the original licorice gums with the liquorice flavour - just to avoid any confusion! Proper Midget Gems, no imitation products, just proper Lions Midget Gems.

2. Rhubarb & Custards - a classic British boiled sweet. A traditional boiled sweet loved by many with a tart Rhubarb flavour combined with sweet & creamy custard flavour.

3. Pontefract cakes - Traditional Soft Liquorice coins made by Taveners which is sweet in taste and has a smooth texture. In our traditional sweet shop and our online sweet shop we sell hundreds of these liquorice sweets each day, a firm sweet favourite which is hard to beat!

4. Yorkshire Mixture - A super classic Yorkshire boiled sweet mixture - crammed full of delicious hard boiled sweets like Pear Drops, Fishes, Fruit Rock & more. You can't get more traditional flavours packed into one bag!
